![]() ![]() The stylus tracks the grooves properly and reduces the risk of harm to your collection. Sumiko has developed RS 78 for this very reason. Meant to track the ‘microgrooves’ of 33s & 45s, it will sound poor and cause undue harm to the disc (and potentially the cartridge!). Please note that it’s not advisable to play 78rpm records with a diamond stylus. It’s pictured both installed and uninstalled, but the 2nd image in the reel depicts what you’ll be getting when you order. ![]() To be as clear as possible, what we’re offering here is only the replacement stylus (the yellow piece). It uses a 78-appropriate bonded 3mil spherical diamond with aluminum cantilever, tracks between 4.0 – 5.5g with a recommended VTF of 5.0g. Tracking force, recommended: 1.Sumiko is excited to be introducing the the long-awaited RS 78 stylus for 78rpm discs! This stylus is interchangeable with each of our Next-Gen Oyster MM replacement styli - Rainier, Olympia & Moonstone - and it’s never been easier to switch over to shellac when you get the itch. Tracking ability at 315Hz at recommended tracking force: 80 µm FIM distortion at recommended tracking force, DIN 45.542: < 1% Output voltage at 1000 Hz, 5cm/sec: 4 mV ![]() We recently asked JICO to make a hyper-elliptical version of the OM10 stylus and can now offer this with an OMB10 body for just $180. A recent addition to our product line is the JICO JR645SE at $275 which is excellent value for money. These are now superseded by the VM540ML which is $440. The most popular over the last few years has been the Audio Technica AT440ML series. Unfortunately, these more complex diamond tips are considerably more expensive than elliptical or round diamonds, so cartridges including them typically range from $300 upwards. This is because the V-shaped tip traces the grooves more precisely, giving better detail retrieval, improved tracking, lower surface noise, and lower wear. ![]() When people ask for my recommendations regarding cartridges I always encourage them to purchase a cartridge that has a line contact style of diamond (such as hyper-elliptical, MicroLine, Shibata etc). ![]()
